Master your smartphone!

Follow these easy rules…

  1. Think about what you are going to say, do not use a script…. It will not work unless you are a professional.
  2. Put some bullet points together, and tape them to your screen, near the camera. (under the lens) This will help remind you what your message is. Only ever cover maximum three points.
  3. Know where are you going to shoot your video, is this an event or at your home? Try to control the element you are shooting in. Watch what is going on behind you.
  4. The sunlight needs to Face you and behind the camera. Make sure it is NOT too bright. Your smartphone needs a lot of light. Natural light is the best.       Lighting Options on Amazon
  5. Think about noise around you, the mic will pick this up. Get away from the centre of the noise.
  6. Preparing your phone by not hand holding it. Your phone will constantly change the focus mode. Tap and Hold the screen with your finger, press it in the centre of the screen and it will LOCK. AE/AF-LOCK…  Don’t make your audience seasick. You’ll also need a Tripod and a phone mount. Mini Tripods are not expensive. You need to have the lens at eye level. DON’T be looking down, camera lens needs to be at eye level or slightly higher… Use a pile of books if you need to prop your smartphone up higher.
  7. Interruptions on your phone, put your phone on “Flight Mode” minimize the distractions. Make sure you turn the Camera mode to video and then click the reverse button to selfie mode. You might want to make sure your video is set at 1080 Resolution, you can go higher and I do (Heather) but it does use up your battery and storage. You’ll need to go to your settings tab, Camera and the video.
  8. Now, remember where you are supposed to look. A little trick is to try putting a star or little circle around the lens. The whole puncher circles. Visual prompt. Your smartphone for Facebook is horizontal, while for Instagram Live and Instagram Stories it’s vertical.
  9. OH…Your DIRTY lens, the natural oils on your fingers or the dust and dirt in a lady’s purse can make your phone lens dirty… CLEAN your lens! Always carry cleaning wipes on you.
  10. Test your smartphone audio or make sure you have a plug-in microphone. Try a lapel mic known as a lavaliere, a Rode microphone is not too expensive and works really well. There is also a shotgun microphone. Find one with a longer cord so you have room to move. It will plug into the headphone jack. Sometimes your internal mic is just fine, but having the option is always the best.                     Microphones on Amazon
  11. Record a test video and check the sound, lighting and background. HINT: If your mic is plugged in you’ll need to remove it to hear the sound.
  12. RECORD your video!

  13. Remember to smile before you hit record… speak to me sincerely…

It sounds like a whole lot of things to remember, but once you’ve taken a few videos it’ll become a habit. We call this…“Time on Task”
