1- Best gear to get for starting up with photography

Brad: phones are good to start but you might suffer on the sound side of things. I would recommend a digital SLR camera like

Nikon D3400 24.2 MP Digital SLR Camera Bundle

Canon EOS Rebel T6 DSLR Camera with Lens Kit

A Canon G9 would be a good option for a pocket camera.

You can do photos and videos with these. They have a Wifi feature so you can upload wirelessly.

Mike: for the immediate post, not necessarily the best image quality, go with your phone. But for quality use a good camera.  You should learn to get confident to learn to use your camera and try the different features.

2- Three pro photo/video tips

1- Keep it simple (!) and short. Plan your video or photo, do a storyboard for video, think how your photo/video will tell a story.

2- LIGHT, for both video and photo. Take your angle depending on the best light. Sidelight and backlight instead of front light.

3- Check the view, look for the background. Be picky, watch for photo bombers! Take control, be specific, tell your subjects what you want. Be the director.

4- Tip for snow and outdoor photography, invest in a good external flash (and charge your battery).

3- Common mistakes to avoid

Avoid the usual “flat” photo. Think tridimensional. Use leading lines, step five feet to the right and put a piece of driftwood in the foreground of a sunset. It gives you perspective and depth. Don’t post frequently, be consistent and use quality images. Curate your brand.

4- Your thoughts on copyrights

If we put it out on the social media world, it’s out there, go ahead repost but make sure our name goes along with it. Give credits & tag us. BUT if you take photos on our website and use it commercially that’s a big no, no. It’s copyrighted work. You can’t do that.

5- Editing Software

We use the Adobe Suite. Paint.net, Gimp, Photoscape, all look good for basic stuff. iMovie is a good basic tool. Shout out for ACDC (the software!).

Closing note

Photography is a good way to update the image of your brand. Photos of your staff at work, behind the scene… Use a mix or curated images and behind the scene shots. Create an editorial installment on social media. It will help your clients relate with your business.
