My new Gym – Lifestyle Health & Fitness Nanaimo

I’m a runner and I love to run, usually four or five times a week….now when I say run I should also say sometimes I walk and run… lots of hills…

Nanaimo has some pretty amazing trails to run on, but my all time favorite is to run along the ocean… this type of exercise is highly therapeutic and has been unbelievable for my soul… The beauty of the landscape and the wild life are simply glorious and the ability to let yourself just go off into another world, this is my place to unwind and let the worries of today go… a place to create new ideas and feel good about life…

Lately however it has got really cold and now it is very icy in the morning. One thing I learned while living in Whistler was if you’re running on hills they get mighty slippery… Last year I injured myself falling into a ditch.

I had noticed the sign for Lifestyle a few times as I drove by and the proximity from my home was not just a coincidence… it was meant to be..

My friend Janice Strachan told me that once she got over 40 years old it became harder and harder to lose weight, she eventually decided to join a gym and start lifting weights, to help build up the muscle she was loosing.. she said she also ran for years and never could lose any weight… as soon as she started lifting weights and interval training she said she found the secret.

Let me tell you something unique about this gym… I say unique because any gym I have ever belonged to in the past charged extra for absolutely everything… at Lifestyle all the boot camp, yoga and cycling classes are included….they even have a pool, private area for women and tons of equipment to work out on…. for less than $50 a month I can do it all….I signed up without hesitation and started attending my new gym…

One innocent morning I noticed a boot camp was about to start, how hard could it be I asked myself, I’m a runner, been running for years… in I went.. not realizing they call it “Boot Camp” for a reason… once again 0 to 100 in 60 minutes… what was I thinking?…

In the class was about 20 women, from all ages and a token couple of men…our instructor was a funny young guy who was very welcoming by the name of Chris Joseph; Chris is a group fitness leader, sport and conditioning specialist… with a license to torture… my goodness he worked us into a dizzy… we started slowly and before I knew what hit me I was doing jumping jacks and burpees, hitting the floor with push-ups and only stopping momentarily to grab a sip of water…I watched that clock like it was my best friend… hurry ticker …tick…

Had I known Chris was the strength and conditioning coach for the Nanaimo Clippers at one time I might have been scared into going home… but ignorance was bliss today…

Come the weekend I couldn’t move and thank goodness I didn’t have too… where did these un-used muscles come from… I tell you, you don’t know what you don’t know until you wake the monster… Wow was I surprised to find myself in such poor condition.. embarrassed really…

But I wasn’t giving up… why? Because I agree with what Janice and my sister Cathie have been telling me for years now… I need to strengthen my core and my muscles to burn more calories…

I don’t hate Chris, I welcome the new found torture and look forward to each “Boot Camp”.. because I am getting stronger.. and I am finally loosing weight… Thank you, thank you, thank you….

You know I am feeling really good.. I’m only two weeks in but I can tell something is happening…something good…and just in time for Christmas and all my favorite treats… oh ya a bikini sounds great for May, but right now I’m aiming for a few cocktails with candy-canes and my favorite is shortbread cookies… with all the extra out-put I’m sure I can afford a few more calories… no.. a lot more…

Chris is going to see me a few more times before I ring in the New Year and my new routine at the gym is just starting to feel comfortable… which means I need to take it up a notch….

Cheers!
