Soiree – Whistler Film Festival Society Gala and Auction
The sun was shinning bright as the evening cocktails began to flow on the patio over looking Burrard Inlet at the Nu Restaurant and Lounge in Vancouver. Now my blog is about Social Whistler, right? Well on this particular occasion Whistler was brought to Vancouver…..
Red carpet, bright lights and photographers galore…. you were made to feel a little like a celebrity…
Future in Focus
Is a campaign for the Whistler Film Festival Society to raise $5,000,000 in just two years – which will then be the 11th anniversary of The Whistler Film Festival. You might think this a very large undertaking; but with the enthusiasm and energy that Shawn Williamson Chair Board of Directors and Shauna Hardy Mishaw – Executive Director & Co – Founder have, I know this lofty goal is achievable. The Whistler Film Festival has a small staff of highly talented people and a volunteer team that any organization could only dream of…..With Sponsors such as American Express & Whistler Brewing Company, patrons and film enthusiast from across the globe, Whistler Film Festival is set to conquer some much-needed territory.
What is the money for?
I’m glad you asked – Behind and down below the TELUS Whistler Conference Center is the Rainbow Theatre – tired, not being used and well quite frankly costing the RMOW money… Tax payers money! This long forgotten theatre is a diamond in the rough…Shauna is one smart cookie… The Goal – To Transform Whistler’s Rainbow Theatre into a state-of-the-art screening venue – in turn creating a permanent home for the Festival…. Creating an even greater impact on the world as a leading center for film… Bringing even more tourist dollars into our village and helping tourism Whistler put us on the map – the world map… The new Theatre will host the annual Film Festival which opens the ski season each year in December – become a venue for Industry Forums, screening series, enhanced professional development programs for film makers and youth… arts – cultural and heritage, dialogue and education…amoung other things that I am sure will be inspired by the vision…
The host for the evening was TV personality, reporter, and producer Erin Cebula – Erin was very funny and kept the crowd of about 250 guests very entertained. Jim Byrnes played incredible blues and is always such a pleasure to listen to – Jim is a lovely person with a very low-key personality that is quite appealing. Our live Artist for the evening was Whistler’s very own Chili Thom – a young man who is very stylish and sweet… I can say I have a few Chili Thom pieces and this artist is very talented… MLA for West Vancouver-Sea to Sky Joan McIntyre was greeting the guests and as always Joan has a personality that beams friendliness. The auction items were varied and covered a broad spectrum of value…You could bid from $50 to $5000 – on a live auction item such as the Rivers Inlet Sportsman’s Club Fishing Trip.. Ultimate Hockey Night in Vancouver….or The Extreme Cat Skiing and Scandinave Spa package….The wine flowed freely with your ticket price of $125 and the food never stopped all night long….
Funds raised for the evening came in around $35,000…. With the help of our provincial Govt and many others we hope to see renovations start on the Theatre by next spring….
Good luck to Shauna and her team…I truly believe with everyone’s help you will make this goal…. You have a vision inspired by passion… that in my mind equals success…..We’ll see you December 1-5, 2010 for this years Festival…If not before to lend a helping hand…
